Charging from your own generation

A home charger paired with solar can divert surplus generation into the car instead of exporting it. Whether that is worth having depends on when the car is actually at home. If it sits on a drive all day, it is compelling; if it only ever charges at 11pm, a time-of-use tariff may do more for you.

Tethered or untethered

Tethered has the cable permanently attached and is quicker day to day. Untethered takes any cable and is more flexible if you change car. Most domestic units are 7kW single phase, which will fill a typical battery overnight.

The electrical checks

The electrician checks the incoming supply and main fuse rating, the earthing arrangement, the consumer unit capacity and the cable route. PEN fault protection is a requirement — either built into the charger or provided separately.

Load management may be needed so the charger backs off when the house is drawing heavily. That is normal, not a sign of an inadequate supply.

Grants and schemes

Support schemes exist for some households, particularly flats and rental properties, and the eligibility rules change. We cannot tell you whether you qualify — check the current GOV.UK guidance and ask your installer to confirm before you rely on it.
